Adem\u00e1s de la estimulaci\u00f3n musical que en ocasiones se aplica a las plantas, los v\u00ednculos entre flora y m\u00fasica son pr\u00e1cticamente inabarcables. Prestando atenci\u00f3n concreta al jazz, las piezas y sus t\u00edtulos, la tem\u00e1tica e incluso las portadas plantean un recorrido por un aut\u00e9ntico vergel de sorprendente diversidad.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Si como propone la fonotrop\u00eda el desarrollo de las plantas puede estimularse utilizando m\u00fasica, escuchando a Duke Ellington \u00e9stas probablemente crecer\u00edan a ritmo sincopado. Y aunque es una inc\u00f3gnita si lo har\u00edan m\u00e1s r\u00e1pidamente s\u00ed que podemos afirmar que el jazz ha crecido incorporando vegetaci\u00f3n a pr\u00e1cticamente todas los componentes de su imaginario. De esta manera, con un simple vistazo es f\u00e1cil percatarse de que un gran n\u00famero de piezas y portadas de jazz est\u00e1n pobladas de la m\u00e1s diversa flora, ya sea salvaje o dom\u00e9stica. Este art\u00edculo quiere ser un recorrido \u2013 deliberadamente no exhaustivo- a trav\u00e9s del jard\u00edn del jazz, con sus caminos, claros y, por supuesto, las diminutas flores que a veces un gran \u00e1rbol convierte en una suerte de secreto.<\/p>\n

La primera divisi\u00f3n natural -observable en ocasiones tambi\u00e9n en humanos- que podemos realizar est\u00e1 en la naturaleza salvaje o no de la flora. La jungla designa un lugar cuyo significado \u00faltimo est\u00e1 m\u00e1s ligado a sus pobladores que a la vegetaci\u00f3n selv\u00e1tica que la constituye. Ya sea como s\u00edmbolo de fiereza, pugna o libertad, sus ecos resuenan en multitud de t\u00edtulos, desde el cl\u00e1sico Jungle blues <\/a><\/em><\/strong>escrito por Jerry Roll Morton al cubop de Machito en Wild Jungle<\/a> <\/em><\/strong>pasando por Jungle madness<\/a><\/em><\/strong> o Under the blue jungle moon<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, que Billie Holiday interpret\u00f3 como nadie. Money jungle<\/a><\/em><\/strong> da nombre al imprescindible LP de Duke Ellington, quien treinta a\u00f1os antes hab\u00eda creado el \u00abjungle style\u00bb que marc\u00f3 toda una \u00e9poca en los clubes de Harlem.<\/p>\n

En el polo opuesto a la jungla aparece el jard\u00edn, lugar modelado a conveniencia de su creador y cuya belleza, en cierto modo domesticada, ha inspirado tambi\u00e9n el jazz. La pieza m\u00e1s conocida es el est\u00e1ndar Royal Gardens Blues<\/a><\/em><\/strong> dedicado a los Royal Gardens (en la actualidad Lincoln Gardens) de Chicago donde tocaron m\u00fasicos esenciales del g\u00e9nero como King Oliver o Bix Beiderbecke. Tambi\u00e9n se convirti\u00f3 en est\u00e1ndar el tema de la pel\u00edcula Garden of the moon<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, que propon\u00eda la ex\u00f3tica idea de un jard\u00edn lunar. Casi como esquejes que producen ra\u00edces de forma independiente, en ocasiones se utilizan canciones populares como material jazz\u00edstico, como en el caso de A garden in the rain<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. Aunque de relaci\u00f3n indirecta, es imposible hablar de jardines y jazz sin que acuda a la mente la banda sonora de Midnight in the garden of good and evil<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, integrada casi en su totalidad por composiciones de Johnny Mercer.<\/p>\n

Como rey indiscutible de la vegetaci\u00f3n, alrededor del \u00e1rbol se han construido toda clase de s\u00edmbolos y mitos. Adem\u00e1s de representar la vida y el crecimiento, su car\u00e1cter ascendente lo hace a menudo un s\u00edmbolo m\u00e1gico de uni\u00f3n entre lo terrenal y lo celeste. Su presencia en la m\u00fasica es esencial, y de igual manera aparece en el jazz. Cobijaba a los que escribieron Down by the sycamore tree<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, In the shade of the old apple tree<\/a><\/em><\/strong> o Under the bamboo tree<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, ptomando un matiz casi b\u00edblico en Don’t sit under the apple tree<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, popularizado por la orquesta de Glenn Miller. Tambi\u00e9n es protagonista en todas sus variedades en Willow tree<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, Olive tree<\/a><\/em><\/strong> o The Jasmine tree<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, entre otros y funciona como met\u00e1fora en Love doesn’t grow in trees<\/a><\/em><\/strong> y The pitch-tree thing<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. Adem\u00e1s, Yusuf Lateef llev\u00f3 a\u00fan m\u00e1s lejos la idea de un jard\u00edn lunar introduciendo una especie aut\u00f3ctona en Moon tree<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

El privilegio de las flores, del cual se suele omitir que es esencialmente cruel, es la belleza que a menudo hace que sean cercenadas de sus tallos para servir de obsequio o ingrediente para esencias. Esa fr\u00e1gil belleza las sit\u00faa en un lugar privilegiado de la cultura humana, siendo por supuesto un elemento importante de atenci\u00f3n por parte de la m\u00fasica, ya sea de forma aut\u00f3noma o simb\u00f3lica. En el terreno del jazz su presencia es evidente en temas como Honeysuckle rose<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, The Rose<\/a><\/strong><\/em> o Mighty like a rose<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. Pero no es la rosa la \u00fanica protagonista de s\u00edncopas e improvisaciones, tambi\u00e9n se han dedicado compases a las margaritas perezosas en Where the lazy daisies grow<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, la flor de loto en Lotus blossom<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, las flores del bosque en Forest flower<\/a><\/strong><\/em> o la delicada Fleurette africaine<\/a><\/strong><\/em> que se encuentra precisamente en Money jungle.<\/p>\n

Tambi\u00e9n son el tema central de Passion flower<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, A flower is a lovesome thing<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (reinterpretada burlonamente en ocasiones como A flower is a lonesome thing), la evocadora I picked a flower the color of your eyes<\/a><\/strong><\/em> o Days of wine and roses<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, tema hom\u00f3nimo de la pel\u00edcula.<\/p>\n

Adem\u00e1s de en las que ilustran este texto, las plantas est\u00e1n presentes en multitud de portadas de jazz como Earth blossom<\/em> (The John Betsch Society)<\/a><\/strong>, Whims of chambers<\/strong><\/em> (Paul Chambers Sextet)<\/strong><\/a>, Jazz Suite<\/em> (The Stan Tracey Sextet)<\/a><\/strong>, The Tal Farlow Album<\/em> (Tal Farlow)<\/a><\/strong> o Honeysuckle breeze<\/em> (Tom Scott)<\/a><\/strong>, por poner algunos ejemplos. Adem\u00e1s est\u00e1 presente de forma sugerida en las de Jim Flora, de clara inspiraci\u00f3n org\u00e1nica, confirmando que las plantas, agrestes o familiares, son parte indispensable del pensamiento y actividad humana.<\/p>\n

La tr\u00e1gica desconsideraci\u00f3n general hacia las hojas, vitales como encargadas de la fotos\u00edntesis pero barridas y pisoteadas diariamente, tom\u00f3 forma en el jazz cuando se cambi\u00f3 el t\u00edtulo de Les feuilles mortes por Autumn leaves<\/a><\/em><\/strong> y se excluy\u00f3 a las hojas -otrora protagonistas del t\u00edtulo- de su letra. Pueden ser prof\u00e9ticas o portadoras de buena suerte, como en The tea leaf prophecy<\/a><\/em><\/strong> o I’m looking over a four leaf clover<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, doradas como en Golden leaf strut<\/a><\/strong><\/em> o de arce como Maple leaf rag<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, pero est\u00e1 claro que su desatenci\u00f3n las hac\u00eda merecedoras de este epitafio a modo de coda.<\/p>\n
