What attracted you to Botany?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve always been fascinated by plants, and I think my father had a lot to do with that. I made my first \u2018herbarium\u2019 with him when I was five or six years old, and he was the one who taught me the first scientific names of some common species. I still remember the excitement of going out into the countryside and recognising them for myself. While my classmates were busy observing \u2018bugs\u2019, I was doing the same with plants, those immobile beings, capable of adapting to the most unexpected places and with a wide variety of colours and shapes (if you were able to appreciate them).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, it was during my second year of university, in my Botany class, that my interest in studying plants really took off. I liked it so much that I used to go to the library to look for books to learn more about certain topics. I was able to consolidate all this knowledge in the Master’s Degree in Biodiversity at the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM). There were only three of us on the plant science track (botany was all the rage among students…), so it was almost like private practical classes. That was when I really realised that I wanted to pursue a career in botany. It was also the moment when I had to start defining which group of plants interested me the most. Although I liked them all, I\u2019ve always had a preference for those that tend to go unnoticed, such as bryophytes or grasses, the latter group being the one I ended up working with. The interesting thing about these groups is that, although at first glance they may seem very similar, when you look at them in detail you discover a surprising diversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Could you summarise your professional career?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I studied Biology at the UAM and my first contact with research was thanks to a collaboration grant in the Department of Botany. After completing my degree, I took a Master’s in Biodiversity and, at the same time, I obtained a research grant that allowed me to work on the identification and computerisation of herbarium specimens. Shortly after completing my master’s degree, in 2013, I obtained an FPI grant, which enabled me to do my PhD at the University of C\u00f3rdoba as part of the Flora Ib\u00e9rica<\/em> project, which aimed to conduct a taxonomic study of a group of the Festuca<\/em> genus (Poaceae<\/em>). I was involved in this project as a researcher until 2021 and, during this time, I was able to visit many herbariums on the peninsula, such as the one in Coimbra, which houses the most important Willkomm collection, as well as undertaking several stays to increase my knowledge in molecular and cytogenetic techniques. During these years, I also participated in many field campaigns, especially in mountainous areas of the peninsula, which allowed me to learn more about this flora. By the end of 2021, I joined the GBIF Spain Coordination Unit, where I worked as a project coordinator and participated in the development of standards for species information, while continuing to collaborate on research projects with the University of C\u00f3rdoba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the present, at the end of 2024, I returned to the University of C\u00f3rdoba with a position as Assistant Professor, where I work as a researcher and lecturer in the field of Botany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does your professional day-to-day life consist of?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

My day-to-day work is very varied, and that\u2019s one of the things I enjoy most about this profession. I spend a good part of my time preparing and teaching classes. Teaching is a very enriching experience because, in addition to contributing to the education of students, it allows me to continue to learn and keep up to date with the latest advances in botany. I\u2019m also still involved in research, resuming projects and lines of work in grass taxonomy, regional flora and conservation that had been put on hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the things I like the most about this profession is the variety of environments in which I work. One day I can be in the office reading articles or analysing data, another in the laboratory with samples, and the next hiking through the mountains in the middle of a collection campaign. What many people don’t realise is everything that goes into collecting samples or searching for rare species. Sometimes you have to travel many kilometres along difficult roads to reach remote locations, and then walk cross country carrying all kinds of equipment (field notebook, envelopes, bags, hoe, camera…) because, of course, plants don’t always appear where you expect them to. Then it’s time to organise and press the material, sometimes at night with only a head torch for light. And, of course, all the subsequent work in the laboratory. These days are the most intense, but also the most rewarding because, in addition to enjoying unique landscapes, they give me a broader perspective and I can see with my own eyes what I\u2019ve read in books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you proud to have been involved in a particular project or discovery?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m proud to have participated in Flora Ib\u00e9rica<\/em>, a large-scale scientific project whose objective was to collect and study the taxonomy of all vascular plant species (pteridophytes, gymnosperms, and angiosperms) that grow spontaneously on the Iberian Peninsula. I joined in its final stage, between 2013 and 2021, to collaborate on volume XIX, dedicated to grasses. I\u2019m glad to have done my bit in a project that involved more than 250 researchers from 72 institutions and received uninterrupted funding from 1980 to 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve also described two new species of Festuca<\/em> endemic to the Iberian Peninsula (Festuca greuteri<\/em> and Festuca devesae<\/em>). The discovery of new species is always exciting, but in the current context of global change it becomes even more relevant. I believe that these contributions are key to improving our knowledge of biodiversity and its conservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How important are such projects for society at large?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Flora Ib\u00e9rica<\/em> project gave rise to what\u2019s considered the first modern flora of the Iberian Peninsula, a work of the same name comprising no less than 21 volumes. This work is possibly the most important in Spanish botany and reflects the incredible floral wealth of our territory, with a total of 6,120 species (6,926 taxa considering subspecies) belonging to 1,262 genera and 189 families of vascular plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although some groups have undergone taxonomic and nomenclatural changes\u2014we have to take into account that many volumes were produced more than 30 years ago\u2014it remains the main reference for the study of Iberian flora. Any study of vascular plants on the Iberian Peninsula uses this work as a basis for species identification. In addition, it provides data on the distribution, ecology, chromosome number and flowering season of species, making it an essential tool not only for scientists, but also for environmental managers, students and anyone interested in botany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is your relationship with the Jard\u00ed Bot\u00e0nic and its staff?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I had the opportunity to spend a short time at the Jard\u00ed Bot\u00e0nic of the University of Valencia in 2020, in Dr. Josep Rossell\u00f3’s laboratory, extracting DNA from some plant samples. During that time, I also visited the VAL Herbarium and met Xuso Riera and Javier Fabado, who kindly provided me with Festuca<\/em> material. Whenever I visit a herbarium, I can’t avoid reviewing the material from this genus\u2014it’s a habit you pick up in this job! Unfortunately, my stay was interrupted by COVID, but I\u2019m still in contact with the herbarium staff and hope to be able to go back to reviewing those pending sheets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How would you encourage current biology students to pursue the same career as you? What do they need?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I would try to convey interest and curiosity about plants, understanding botany as an open door to connect directly with nature and the phenomena that occur within it. Studying plants is not only about knowing them, but also understanding where they live, how they adapt to their environment, and the role they play in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you assess the employment situation in this sector?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The employment situation in science is quite complex in Spain. Investment is still precarious, and it\u2019s now strange not to know someone who\u2019s had to emigrate in search of better conditions. As it\u2019s such a vocational profession, it seems to be taken for granted that working \u2018in our field\u2019 is a privilege in itself. The curious thing is that, in order to reach this point, good academic records, publications and merits of all kinds are required… Only those who have been close to a scientific career know what it really involves: perseverance, dedication, and a steeplechase to achieve something minimally stable. Despite everything, in my case, I believe the effort has been worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which is the basic skill for your work?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The ability to observe, curiosity and patience form an essential triad in botanical work. Botanical research doesn\u2019t provide immediate answers; it often takes time, not only to collect data, but also to analyse it and reach conclusions. In addition, critical thinking is a key question to advance in science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you consider yourself a disciple of any particular botanist?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I consider myself a disciple of Professor Juan Antonio Devesa, professor at the University of C\u00f3rdoba and director of my PhD. He\u2019s been a basic figure in my botanical training, and I owe much of what I know about plants to him. Not only I have learned a lot from his understanding of this discipline, but also from his scientific rigour, his generosity in sharing his knowledge, his passion for this work, and the way he approaches any challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you imagine future botanists?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Like a rara avis<\/em>. There aren\u2019t many university students who are passionate about botany who come to our classrooms, and of those, not all will turn that passion into their profession. I imagine future botanists as specialists in very specific groups and fields, or focused on large-scale data analysis. I don’t know to what extent the use of the magnifying glass will be replaced by the mobile phone and the field by the computer, but what I do believe is that, increasingly, collaboration with enthusiasts and amateurs will play a key role in botanical research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which era of Botany would you have liked to live in and why?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I would have liked to live in the first half of the 19th<\/sup> century\u2014leaving aside other factors\u2014as it was a period of great botanical activity in the Iberian Peninsula, when botanists began to systematically explore and document the flora of this territory. I\u2019d highlight the figures of some foreign botanists who were attracted by its floral diversity and travelled around the peninsula for several years, such as Boissier, who spread the word about the floral wealth of the southern peninsula, and Willkomm, to whom we owe the first complete flora of peninsular Spain and the Balearic Islands. The work of these pioneers not only expanded knowledge about native plants, but also contributed to the first herbariums and scientific collections, which are still fundamental in botany today, and some of whose sheets have passed through my hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which botanist would you have liked to meet in person?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are several botanists I would have liked to meet, but one who has always drawn my attention is Carlos Pau (1857-1937), a pharmacist from Segorbe. My interest in this botanist dates back to my university days, when one of my professors recommended that I read his Gazapos Bot\u00e1nicos cazados en las obras de Don Miguel Colmeiro<\/em> (1891). I must admit that I enjoyed this work a lot, which is rigorous and demonstrates great botanical knowledge, but is also combative and full of caustic phrases criticising superficial and pretentious approaches to science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What tools do you need for your work?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In my daily work, a magnifying glass and micrometer are essential for identifying any specimen, and I need a microscope to observe the anatomical cross-sections of Festuca<\/em> leaves, a character that is essential to identify most species of the genus. In addition, I use all kinds of dissection equipment, such as tweezers, lancets and punches, as well as double-edged razor blades, which are becoming increasingly difficult to find but are perfect for making freehand cuts. There are also tools for herbarium work, drying pads and a press. In some of my research, I have also used molecular techniques in phylogeny and cytogenetics studies. And, of course, a computer and the software needed for the analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the most unpleasant part of your job and the most rewarding?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What I like least is the paperwork, which I have just begun to deal with. However, there are many rewarding aspects, such as knowing that my work contributes to scientific knowledge and understanding of the plant diversity of our territory, learning something new every day and being able to share it with students. I also greatly value collaborating with other researchers, visiting other groups and laboratories, learning new techniques and, ultimately, exchanging ideas and learning from them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you allergic to any plants? To pollen?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m allergic to grass pollen, which is ironic because my scientific career has focused on the study of these plants. I remember a few field trips that literally left me breathless. So, I can say that I have a love-hate relationship with this group, and not just because they are difficult to identify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you have a favourite plant or landscape?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I love high mountain landscapes and their flora. The Iberian Peninsula has a very good representation of these landscapes, and I couldn’t choose just one. I like everything from the limestone landscapes of the Aragonese Pyrenees to the acidic landscapes of the Central System, but my favourites may be those from the south-east of the Iberian Peninsula, both for their rich flora and endemic species and for their geology, as well as the fact that they are the ones I\u2019ve explored the most and never fail to amaze me.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
