Society benefits from the results of this type of project in many ways. Directly or indirectly, this type of initiative contribute to maintaining biodiversity, social well-being, establishing an ethic of responsibility for our environment, to stop the indiscriminate use of resources. During the first years, I spent most of my time collecting field data. In the past few years, there has been an increase in bioinformatics, molecular techniques and the study of predictive models applied to plant ecology. I have integrated some of these advances in my work, because these new techniques have the advantage of being used in a complementary way and allow to approach the study of plants from different angles to test evolutionary or ecological hypotheses. From my point of view, these techniques can also reduce the need of the investigator to go to the field and I see the disadvantage that they can disconnect you “emotionally” from the group of plants or the biological process you are studying, taking some of the passion out of the research.

With botanists on a visit to the island of Crete.

What project are you working on now?

Currently, I’m studying the effect of climate change on hybridization between wild plants. Spontaneous hybridization between plant species is a frequent phenomenon in nature and it affects the diversity of species and the conservation of natural resources, because, depending on the circumstances, it can lead species towards genetic impoverishment or extinction. Or, on the contrary, enrich them genetically and improve their characteristics. The question I would like to answer specifically is whether climate change will affect the rate at which species spontaneously hybridize in nature, if the effect will vary according to the ecological characteristics of the species and if the effect will vary according to the types of ecosystems.

With the PLANGER research group, in which Elena Carrió is currently working, at the Polytechnic University of Madrid.

Fieldwork in Valdemanco. In the last decade, Spain has experienced a continuous reduction of the investment effort in R&D, which has had a negative impact on the scientific and technological system. According to these data, my assessment of the employment situation in the sector is that it could improve a lot with a new orientation of the public spending budget. I think that bringing us up to the European average in terms of spending on research would bring many benefits to our society.

Fieldwork in Morocco. Dissemination decodes scientific information and sends it through many signals to society, which receives it, processes it and can make decisions to change what it doesn’t like and boost what it does like. Scientific activity gains meaning and becomes even more justified thanks to dissemination, so I think it is important to take care of it.

Does your job allow you to learn about topics that aren’t related to Botany?

I do believe that my job allows me to learn about other topics that aren’t strictly focused on Botany. For example, not long ago I prepared some classes about the conservation of plan species and wildlife as part of a course in anthrozoology, which is a discipline that studies the relationship between humans and nature, specially, between humans and the non-human animals. To situate the lectures within the context of the course, I did some research and learned about the types of interactions between humans and non-human animals, as well as the conflict situations.

With botanists in Japan, during a stay at Hokkaido University.

Have you met interesting people thanks to your job?

Yes, I’ve been lucky to meet many people with very different interests from whom I’ve learned a lot. It is not possible to teach these competencies by only informing students through the contents of a classical syllabus. That’s why I think it is important that students, in addition to being trained to be good professionals, are provided with tools that go further and foster a critical and committed spirit based on the exercise of their profession. From my point of view, our current social environment is going through a tough situation that needs something more than professionals, it needs people who are capable of improving any product or circumstance for the benefit of everyone and for the benefit of our environment. And for that it is necessary to know how to think critically.

How do you imagine future botanists?

In the near future, I don’t imagine them to be very different from now. I think that any path you take is hard, so if you are passionate about it, it is better, because it will be less hard. I also think that if you dedicate your life to research it is useful to know how to deal with failure, because in science it is common that experiments fail or that magazines don’t want to publish your articles at the first time. Yet, it seems that this does not happen, because failures are not visible. So you need to keep in mind that it is normal to fail and that it can keep you motivated.

Imagine that you have all the budget that you want. What would you improve in your job?

I would hire young and not so young researchers. I would also allocate funds for laboratory expenses.
