A research team from the Jard\u00ed Bot\u00e0nic and the Departament de Did\u00e0ctica de les Ci\u00e8ncies Experimentals i Socials de la Facultat de Magisteri de la Universitat de Val\u00e8ncia warns of pseudoscience risk in relation to moon\u2019s influence myths or beliefs on agriculture. The scientific revision\u2019s findings of more than a thousand papers \u2013including research papers, monographs, and higher education textbooks\u2013 have been published in Agronomy<\/em> magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work\u2019s origin is found in the Facultat de Magisteri\u2019s classrooms, where \u2013repeatedly\u2013 it is observed that students of Early Childhood and Primary Education degrees, and Master\u2019s Degrees in Secondary Education \u2013Physics and Chemistry and Biology and Geology specialties\u2013 \u201cstart the university believing in a relationship between moon phases and biology crops\u201d, explains Professor Olga Mayoral, deputy of the Jard\u00ed Bot\u00e0nic de la Universitat de Val\u00e8ncia.\nThis reality led the teaching staff to propose a broad scientific revision, in order to verify if these moon\u2019s myths about plants\u2019 growth had any consolidated scientific basis both in the fields of biology and agronomy as in physics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authors, Olga Mayoral, Jordi Solbes, Jos\u00e9 Cant\u00f3, and Tatiana Pina, argue that the analyzed documents are, especially, scientific articles, but monographs and higher education textbooks have also been carefully studied \u2013which are considered consolidated science and are employed in teaching degrees linked to botany, agronomy, and physics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the first referenced article on agricultural beliefs related to the moon was published by Cyril Beeson in Nature<\/em> magazine in 1946, studies related to this subject have continued to take place until as recently as 2020. This revision aims to collect the most relevant publications in order to confirm that, according to the work\u2019s results, first of all, in the monographs \u201cno relationship is established between the moon and the plants\u2019 growth\u201d and, secondly, that the articles\u2019 arguments \u201cdo not provide any clear scientific evidence to corroborate the Earth\u2019s satellite influence on crops\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Promoting students\u2019 critical thinking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Due to the absence of scientific support on the casual relationship between lunar influences \u2013tides and luminosity, above all\u2013 and plants\u2019 growth, the authors of this study encourage the teachers involved in science education to \u201cobjectively address pseudoscientific ideas on this subject while promoting students\u2019 critical thinking\u201d.\nThe researchers responsible for this work also warn that some popular traditions related to the moon\u2019s influence on plants\u2019 physiology have been incorporated into the so-called biodynamic agriculture \u2013an agricultural management system avoiding the use of industrial fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides\u2013 such as organic farming while assuming that cosmic forces and rhythms, among others those of the moon, affect sowing and harvesting times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An important part of the research and bibliographic revision was done in different Harvard University libraries \u2013especially in the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University<\/em> excellent one\u2013 during a research stay of Olga Mayoral and Tatiana Pina in 2019, co-financed by the Reial Col\u00b7legi Complutense (RCC)-Harvard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The research team of this scientific revision published in Agronomy<\/em> is part of the Research group on science education and science teacher training (Grup de recerca en educaci\u00f3 cient\u00edfica i formaci\u00f3 del professorat de ci\u00e8ncies, GIUV2013-175) and is framed in two of its research lines: Science Teacher Training, Proposals for improvement; and Socio-scientific issues and critical thinking in scientific educations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
