The Jard\u00ed Bot\u00e0nic deputy director, Olga Mayoral<\/strong>, also a Departament de Did\u00e0ctica de les Ci\u00e8ncies de la Facultat de Magisteri professor, has chosen Quercus virginiana<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. <\/strong><\/em>It is a classic of the Jard\u00ed, a fantastic exemplary, and a warm welcome. Furthermore, the Southern live oak <\/strong>is a reference species in US cinematography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Quercus sp.<\/em><\/p><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This specimen of Quercus sp<\/em><\/strong>. is one of the monumental trees of the Jard\u00ed Bot\u00e0nic with more natural growth. Marta Mu\u00f1oz<\/strong>, our agricultural engineer who is specialized in arboriculture, highlights its vitality, seniority, and structural architecture, typical of mature development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Quercus rotundifolia Lam<\/strong><\/em>. Neotype<\/p><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Jes\u00fas Riera<\/strong> and Javier Fabado<\/strong>, the conservatives of the Herbari<\/strong>, selected the Quercus rotundifolia Lam<\/strong><\/em>. Neotype, collected in Ragudo de l’Alt Pal\u00e0ncia. It\u2019s our “carrasca”<\/strong>, typical of extensive areas such as the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a Neotype because when Lamarck described the plant, he did it on live specimens. His description never refers to any herbarium sheet or illustration. He points out the natural growth of the specimen in Spain. Neotype means that it is selected as a nomenclatural type specimen or illustration, due to the fact that there is no original material appointed by the botanist who described the species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the article<\/a> where Q. rotundifolia <\/em>is typified, Q. ballota<\/em>, is also typified and indicates how the “carrasca” should be called depending on whether it is considered a species (Q. rotundifolia<\/em>) or a subspecies (Q. ilex <\/em>subsp. rotundifolia<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. The European nettle tree<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

From the Jard\u00ed Bot\u00e0nic\u2019s library<\/strong>, Ana Mira<\/strong> and Javi Barrachina<\/strong>, selected the European nettle tree<\/strong> from the circular courtyard of the entrance. For them, it is very representative of their activity as a service. The strong, flexible wood of Celtis australis<\/a><\/em><\/strong> was used to make field tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Norfolk Island hibiscus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The Norfolk Island hibiscus <\/strong>is one of the favorites of Eva Pastor<\/strong><\/a>, biologist and head of the Departament de Cultura i Comunicaci\u00f3 del Jard\u00ed Bot\u00e0nic. This specimen of Lagunaria patersonii<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, situated in the central corridor, is also her children\u2019s favorite one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Tipu tree<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The biologist Anna Nebot<\/strong> updates the Jard\u00ed Bot\u00e0nic\u2019s plants inventory. One of her most beloved trees is Tipuana tipu<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, from the ancient collection. Let\u2019s observe how the sun\u2019s rays pierce the leaves, offering so many shades of greens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Podocarpus macrophyllus<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Elisa Caballer<\/strong>, a Departament Cultura i Comunicaci\u00f3 del Jard\u00ed Bot\u00e0nic biologist, loves two Podocarpus macrophyllus<\/a><\/em><\/strong> that have grown together, forming a forest thicket. It has a Japanese origin and its small fruits, seeming ‘kodama’ spirits, create a magical effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Chaste tree<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Amparo Ibor<\/strong>, the Jard\u00ed Bot\u00e0nic services coordinator, says that the bare Winter branches of Vitex agnus-castus<\/a><\/em><\/strong> seem to be waiting to sing a lullaby. It is the Chaste tree<\/strong>, a Mediterranean shrub, deciduous with multiple and curios medicinal uses, many of them, linked to gynecology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Oriental plane tree<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The Oriental plane tree<\/strong> is a classic shading tree for Mediterranean walks and avenues. Luis Blas, an arboriculture specialist, has chosen Platanus orientalis<\/a><\/em><\/strong> to emphasize its good quality wood, high valued in cabinetmaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. Caucasian elm<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Amparo Narbona<\/strong>, Jard\u00ed Bot\u00e0nic administrator, keeps a special memory of Zelcova carpinifolia<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. Many years ago there was a huge rumble caused by the fall of part of this Caucasian elm<\/strong>, which is still alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11. Swamp paperbark<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Elena Estrelles<\/strong>, curator of the Banc de Germoplasma<\/strong> del Jard\u00ed Bot\u00e0nic, highlights this specimen of  Melaleuca ericifolia<\/strong><\/em><\/a> because is the most twisted of the Jard\u00ed. The Swamp paperbark<\/strong> comes from Australia and is very salinity resistant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12. Floss silk tree<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Jos\u00e9 Plumed<\/strong>, an arboriculture specialist, has it very clear: his favorite tree for the “Dia de l’Arbre”, is the ornamental: Ceiba speciosa<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. The Floss silk tree<\/strong> can exceed 30 meters; it has woody and conical ulcers on the trunk and makes spectacular pink flowers. Cy-yba<\/em> means mother tree in Americium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

13. Carob tree<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Carob tree<\/strong> is the most esteemed one by the Jard\u00ec Bot\u00e0nic journalist, Maria Josep Pic\u00f3<\/strong><\/a>. Ceratonia siliqua<\/strong><\/em>,<\/a> is a Mediterranean icon, typical of dry landscapes. It\u2019s highly valued for its seed, “garrof\u00ed” (which gave name to the carat), and has great potential to combat climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

14. Acacia cyclops<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Banc de Germoplasma <\/strong>del Jard\u00ed Bot\u00e0nic shares these Acacia cyclops<\/strong><\/em>‘s seeds due to their originality. They look like the eye of cyclops and have a very striking color in order to attract animals and encourage species dispersion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

15. Holm oak<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Holm oak<\/strong> represent the Mediterranean forest presence in the Jard\u00ed Bot\u00e0nic de la Universitat de Val\u00e8ncia.  Quercus rotundifolia Lam. <\/strong><\/em>is the tree chosen by our director, Jaime G\u00fcmes<\/strong>. It doesn\u2019t lose the leaf and during the winter stands out in the center of the Bot\u00e0nic, surrounded by deciduous trees.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
